Is your buy sell agreement real, or is it a handshake?

Seven plain questions that separate a funded plan from a hopeful one, with your gaps named in order.

Seven questions, a straight answer

A buy sell agreement is only real if three things are true at the same time: it is written down, the valuation is current, and the money to carry it out actually exists. Most owners have one or two of the three. This check walks the seven questions that separate a funded plan from a hopeful handshake, and names the gaps plainly.

Do you have a written buy sell agreement with your co-owner or co-owners?
If a co-owner died this year, where would the money come from to buy their shares?
When was the business last valued, by any method?
Does your arrangement cover a co-owner becoming disabled and unable to work, not just death?
Who owns the insurance that funds the buyout, and when was that structure last checked against your tax advice?
Does the agreement say what happens on retirement or a voluntary exit, not just death and disability?
If your family inherited your shares tomorrow, would they know the plan, and would there be cash to pay the tax at death?

How this check works

Each question maps to one part of a complete buy sell arrangement: a written agreement, a funding source sized to the shares, a current valuation, coverage for disability as well as death, an ownership structure for the insurance that matches the agreement and current tax advice, written exit terms, and a family that knows the plan with the tax at death accounted for. An answer that is missing, stale, or unsure is flagged as a gap for that part. The check is educational: it does not read your agreement, value your business, or give legal or tax advice. Agreements are drafted by lawyers, valuations are prepared by qualified valuators, and the funding structure should be confirmed with your accountant. Wealth Champions' role is education and coordination, so the pieces get built in the right order.

Framework: standard Canadian buy sell planning practice for closely held corporations, including corporate owned and personally owned funding structures under the Income Tax Act, described in plain language.
