What could your savings become?
A steady eyed projection of your savings at retirement, and the annual income they could sustain to age 90.
A clear eyed look at the road ahead: what your savings could grow to by retirement, and roughly what annual income they could sustain to age 90. Everything is shown in today's dollars, meaning inflation is already taken out, so the numbers are in terms of what money buys now.
Your projection, in today's dollars
| Projected savings at retirement | |
| Estimated sustainable annual income, retirement to age 90 | |
| That is roughly, per month | |
| Real (after inflation) return used |
This income estimate is the amount your savings alone could pay each year, in today's dollars, drawn evenly so the balance reaches zero at age 90 at the assumed real return. It does not include CPP or OAS, which for most Canadians add a meaningful foundation underneath these figures, and it does not model taxes, which differ by account. Treat it as a planning landmark: the conversation is about whether the landmark matches the life you are picturing, and what levers move it.

Methodology and assumptions
The calculator works in real (today's) dollars. Your expected return and inflation inputs are combined into a real return: (1 + return) divided by (1 + inflation), minus 1. Current savings compound at that real rate for the years until retirement, and monthly contributions compound monthly at the equivalent monthly real rate, assumed to be made at each month end. The sustainable income figure assumes the same real return continues through retirement, withdrawals are level in today's dollars, and the savings are fully drawn down at age 90; it uses the standard annuity formula, payment equals balance times the real rate, divided by one minus (1 + real rate) to the power of negative years of retirement. If the real return is zero, the balance is simply divided by the years to age 90.
What is not modelled, stated plainly: taxes of any kind, CPP and OAS benefits, pensions, fees, market ups and downs along the way (a steady average return is assumed, and real returns arrive unevenly), longevity past age 90, long term care costs, and any change in your contributions. A plan built on this projection should be revisited regularly and stress tested against lower returns and longer life. Figures are educational estimates, not a promise of any outcome, and not financial advice.
Method: standard compound growth and annuity mathematics. The 2% inflation reference is the Bank of Canada's inflation control target. No market data is used or implied.
